What is Gumption?

Gumption is personal responsibility.

Gumption is common sense.

Gumption is determination.

The traditional definition of gumption has two alternate meanings:

  1. Sound practical judgement with synonyms including: common sense; ability; intelligence; sagacity; shrewdness; and cleverness.
  2. Fortitude and determination with synonyms including: guts; moxie; initiative; backbone; grit; spirit; spunk; courage, nerve; daring; and enterprise.

Meaning #1 is essentially the ability to figure things out. The ability to deal with life’s real problems in real time. It’s more about being street smart than book smart.

Meaning #2 is a willingness and commitment to get things done. A determination to overcome obstacles. A belief that ‘No’ is an unacceptable answer.

My definition of Gumption (capital G) adds two more components to the traditional definition:

  1. Personal responsibility. The commitment to take 100% responsibility for your thoughts, actions, and interactions with others.
  2. The Life Lessons from the movie Forrest Gump. And specifically, the example of the character for how to ‘live your life with Gumption’.

Gumption is personal responsibility, common sense, and determination.

Gumption is simple – if you use your common sense.

Gumption is easy – if you’re determined and willing to take initiative.

Gumption gets things done – if you take personal responsibility.

Are you living your life with Gumption?
