The first principle of Gumption is mindset. Your mindset is how you think. When you Function with Gumption, you take 100% responsibility for your thinking.
Thinking is hard work.
Being responsible for your thinking is hard work.
Being in control of your thinking is hard work.
So … thinking is hard work.
Here’s why …
When you take responsibility for your thinking, you can’t blindly follow others.
When you take responsibility for your thinking, you can’t blame others.
When you take responsibility for your thinking, you can’t wait for others to tell you what to do … or worse, allow others to tell you what to think.
With responsibility for your thinking, the buck stops here – at your front door.
With responsibility for your thinking, you begin to gain freedom from others.
With responsibility for your thinking, you experience life on your terms.
Life may be like a box of chocolates – and you never know what you’ll get.
But when you do the hard work of thinking, life may still be like a box of chocolates – except now, you get to choose the one you want.
How hard have you been willing to work at your thinking?
Do you see a connection between thinking, working hard, and personal freedom?
Are you willing to do the hard work of thinking?
Note: My blogger friend, Professor Colleen Sharen, writes a regular blog titled Thinking is Hard Work. It’s a management blog based on rigorous research and real-life business problems. I like Colleen’s writing because she mixes hard scientific data with common sense, all in an easy reading style. She deserves full credit for the inspiration of this post’s title. I recommend all thinkers read her posts.
