At the beginning of the movie Forrest Gump, a feather floats lazily in the sky. It is being pushed along by the winds. Mostly the breeze is generated by normal atmospheric conditions. Sometimes the wind comes from a manmade event such as a car. The feather is very light. It is therefore easily lifted, pushed, and influenced by these winds and breezes.
To you – the person sitting on the bench – the feather’s movements are not in your control. The feather’s movement is influenced 100% by outside forces. When a feather lands at your feet – it’s a 100% random occurrence.
Now imagine hundreds (or thousands or millions) of feathers simultaneously floating about.
All of these feathers are influenced by outside forces. At any given moment, there are many, many feathers landing in your general proximity. You could reach down and pick up any one of those feathers. Some are easily within your reach, and others will require that you stretch a little to get them. All of the feathers within your reach are possibilities.
The feathers that look good to you … the feathers that appeal to you … the feathers that you choose to pick up then become your opportunities.
What you do with a feather once you pick it up is entirely up to you.
Do you understand the randomness of the feathers that land at your feet?
Do you see the possibilities (the potential) in the many feathers that are within your proximity?
Are you picking up the feathers you like and turning them into opportunities?
