Forrest pursued Jenny over his lifetime. First as a friend. Then as his girlfriend. And finally as his wife and lover.
Pursuing Jenny rang true to Forrest. It wasn’t a burden. It was natural.
Forrest wasn’t distracted from his pursuit of Jenny by other girls. Girls who sat next to him in his home economics class were just classmates. Floozies he met on New Year’s Eve tasted like cigarettes. They didn’t ring true to Forrest.
When something rings true, it’s more than what lands next to you by chance.
When something rings true, it tastes good.
When something rings true, it sings to your heart.
My own journey has been a bit like Forrest’s journey.
I’ve taken lots of roads that have turned out to be dead ends.
I’ve taken roads that others told me to take.
I’ve pursued paths that initially looked good … but ended up tasting bad.
And I’ve continued my journey when others told me I’m going the wrong way.
But my path rings true to me. So I continue.
Sometimes I walk.
Sometimes I jog lightly.
And sometimes I break into a full run.
I know it’s a marathon. I pace myself. I try to balance getting there quickly with not burning myself out.
Are you following your heart?
Does your journey ring true for you?
Are you pacing yourself by intermittingly walking, jogging, and running?
If it rings true to you – keep going.
I am – with Gumption.
