Million Dollar Wound
Forrest is speaking with the older man on bench. He explains about the war, saving his fellow soldiers, and sadly about Bubba's death. The man asks Forrest if it was a 'bullet that bit him in the buttocks'?
**-- HERE IS THE VIDEO TRANSCRIPT --** They say it's a million dollar wound, but I still ain't seen a nickel of that money. Hi ... today is scene 83. We're going to count down to #1 on July 6th. I'm Steve Weber and my million dollar wound was being born looking like Tom Hanks and Forrest Gump - the good news is it kept me out of combat and it wasn't fatal. A million dollar wound is military slang for a type of wound received in combat which is serious enough to get the soldier sent away from the fighting, but is neither fatal nor permanently crippling. Forrest mistakenly thought it referred to money he was to receive. But it sent him away from fighting and it wasn't fatal or permanently crippling. It's one of the cute moments when Forrest interprets a slang expression literally. It's one of the reasons we all loved Forrest Gump. It was a million dollar wound - it allowed Forrest to play ping-pong. It takes Gumption to make the best of a situation. Forrest was lucky. I believe that people who make the best of situations have more luck. Having Gumption breeds luck. Let's all be gump-like. Let's all make more luck for ourselves ... Let's all live our lives with Gumption.
