We see Forrest at the bottom of the stairs, and Jenny at the top of the stairs. He proposes marriage, she turns him down. He walks outside dejected. There is a flash back to the bridge in Memphis when Jenny scolds Forrest telling him he doesn't know what love it.
**-- HERE IS THE VIDEO TRANSCRIPT --** I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is. Hi, I'm Steve Weber and like Forrest, I may not be a smart man ... I've been using that line for 25 years since the movie came out. Here is scene 24 - I've created this video series to celebrate this year being the 25th anniversary of this great American movie. When Forrest realized that Jenny wouldn't marry him, he said, "I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is." Back when Forrest was saying goodbye to Jenny on the Bridge in Memphis when he was leaving for Vietnam, Jenny scolded Forrest telling him, "You don't know what love is." But Forrest did know what love is. It was Jenny who couldn't - or wouldn't allow herself to love. She still was fighting the demons from her childhood. She told Forrest, "You don't want to marry me" ... she didn't consider herself worthy of marriage. Jenny still didn't like herself ... You can't love someone else until you learn how to love yourself. Forrest may not have been a smart man, but he knew what love is. he knew how to love. Do you want to be more gump-like? ... Learn to love yourself - know what love it. Then, you can love others. Let's learn to live our lives with Gumption.
