The Feather – Opportunities
Opportunities float into and out of our lives.
In the movie Forrest Gump, the opening scene has a feather floating in the sky. The feather floats randomly. As the camera tracks the flight of the feather, we see many things that affect the feather’s flight. A car drives by creating a gust of wind. A person walking redirects the feather’s trajectory ever so slightly. Real physical movements – independent of the feather – affect where the feather goes.
As the feather finally floats to the ground and comes to rest, we see a man sitting on a park bench. The feather comes to rest at his feet. That man, Forrest Gump, reaches down and picks the feather up.
Many random physical influences imposed themselves on the feather before it lands at Forrest’s feet.
Was it luck? Pure randomness? Fate? Destiny? … maybe even an act of God?
Or maybe just a coincidence…
Steve believes that opportunities are like feathers.
They are constantly swirling around and occasionally they land right at our feet. Sometimes they even land in our lap.
Sometimes we have to go looking for feathers. Sometimes we’re searching for a particular feather and can’t find it – missing other feather’s that don’t meet our criteria.
Forrest reached down and picked up the feather when it landed at his foot.
Opportunities that come into our life need to be reached out and grabbed.
Opportunities – or feathers – appear randomly. Our job is to recognize the good ones and pick them up.
In Steve’s presentations … the feather is a unifying theme of potential. Possibilities.
The feather represents the randomness and mystery of of life’s opportunities. The feather represents those opportunities that we reach out and pick up.
Sometimes need to let go of what feather so we can pick up the next opportunity. The opportunity that is sitting on the ground – staring at you.
